There are about 1400 known species of spiders in Canada including the House Spider, Sac spider, Hobo Spider, Wolf spider, two species of tarantulas and two species of black widows; so spider identification can be difficult. Most spiders are harmless, but there are also several poisonous spiders in Canada that you should be aware of; therefore, the ability to identify your spider problem can require the assistance of a professional pest control contractor. The two most common household spiders in Ontario are the Black Footed Spider, a species introduced from southern Europe and the House Spider, which is responsible for most cobwebs found in buildings.
The spider has an un-segmented body with two main divisions, four pairs of walking legs and organs for producing silk that is used for making nests, webs to catch prey or cocoons for its eggs. Spiders can have up to eight eyes. With so many eyes, it is surprising that most spiders are near sighted. Many spiders prey on pests such as flies, mosquitoes, and moths that get caught in their webs. Once the prey becomes tangled in the web, the spider immobilizes it by wrapping it in more silk and then injecting venom to paralyze it. Later the spider injects a pre digestive liquid and sucks out all the nutrients from its prey. Most spiders are nocturnal, shy, and avoid confrontation by running away.
